In the midst of the Cold War between the U.S. and USSR, there was a race to see who could dig the deepest hole into the Earth’s crust.

The winner? The USSR’s Kola Superdeep Borehole.

This hole, known as the “Well to Hell,” reaches 11 km underground and took 24 years to accomplish.
